Thank you for attending my session at the Parenting 101 Summit! I am so excited to share with you my “Family Meeting Magic”: Ideas for Using Family Meetings to Reduce Struggle and Enjoy More Happy Moments with Your Family.
Each week it’s important to have a one-on-one meeting with your partner, as well as check-ins with your kids. Families with very young children will be talking as parents about how to handle the needs that come up through the week. As your child grows, they will start to be able to participate in their own meeting. Create a family meeting plan that works for you.
Your mission if you choose to accept it is to use family meetings to:
Create a culture of appreciation, fondness, and affection
Express needs regularly before they have a chance to build up and come out in the form of criticism, contempt, defensiveness, or stonewalling
Complain about behavior without attacking character
Create agreements rather than stating expectations
Consider ways to state what YOU are going to do, rather than telling others what to do.
Build our understanding of each other’s beliefs, values, preferences, and inner world - both how we feel now and how these things are changing over time
Discuss life’s challenges outside of the moment, when the situation might feel a little less intense and you can think more clearly
